Our day started in Blenheim where we met our guide, Geoff Swift who owns Molesworth Tours with his wife Lee. After introduction’s Geoff took us out of Blenheim on State Highway One and into the Awater Valley. The diversity of Marlborough is really showcased as you begin your journey in the lush winelands of Marlborough, then drive along the pacific coast before heading into the sparse high country. Our first stop was for a delicious morning tea prepared at a high country farm – scones with cream and a coconut cake.
Back in the coach with very full stomachs we continue onto Acheron road and into Molesworth - the views are jaw dropping as you stand atop a barren mountain and look down into the Awatere Valley below. We stop for lunch at Molesworth Cobb Cottage, which is another delicious spread packed for us this morning by Geoff’s wife Lee.
All along the way Geoff tells us the history of the area and the local’s stories as you climb, finally reaching the farm atop Molesworth. His obvious passion for the area and extensive knowledge of both history and folklore really brought the area to life. In the afternoon we continue back down through the area crossing over streams, this is definitely a 4wd only road before crossing over into the Canterbury region and ending the day at Hamner Springs.
