Gisborne and Eastland - it's Time 2 Go!

You may be off the typical tourist trail, but that's a huge plus for a region that scores big on varied scenery and authentic encounters with locals.

Eastland is the first mainland region in the world to greet the sun each day and this remote, isolated corner of the North Island is also gloriously rich in Maori culture. Beginning in Opotiki you can explore the East Cape and gain insight into the history and culture of the local Maori people as you go. Against a beautifully scenic backdrop of pretty beaches and rocky coves you can visit the largest pohutukawa tree in New Zealand, the home town of the Ngati Porou tribe, the Maori craft centre of Eastland and landmarks of Maori architectural design.

Opotiki is the gateway to the East Cape and provides a good base to enjoy ecotourism activities - enjoy fishing, rafting, jet boating or kayaking along the Motu River, and explore the rugged ranges of Raukumara Forest Park.

There is much to be learnt in and around Gisborne, the Chardonnay capital of New Zealand. The area is full of interesting museums showing artefacts, maritime history and technology. See New Zealand's largest carved meeting house or take a drive out to Rere Falls and jettison down the moss-covered natural rock slides. Before leaving, be sure to tour around some of the award-winning vineyards in the region.

This forgotten pocket of New Zealand has much to offer the visitor, sandwiched as it is between the two premier wine-growing regions of Gisborne and Napier/Hastings. Enjoy wilderness trout fishing, hiking, swimming and kayaking on beautiful Lake Waikaremoana or surf, fish or dive along the glorious coastline that stretches from Mahia Peninsula to Napier. Finish by relaxing in Morere's hot springs.
