GoPro to The Coromandel - ROAD TRIP

Driving roads that hug the coastline before traversing the mountainous range clad in sub tropical forest is an adventure in itself.

The Coromandel is known as a road trip destination. Within 2 hours journey of Auckland travellers can be enjoying the serenity and peacefulness that is good for your soul.

Auckland to The Coromandel

From Auckland follow the sign posted Pacific Coast Highway through the rolling hills of Clevedon and on to the Seabird Coast. Stop off for a feed of fish and chips, a mineral spa at Miranda or to check out the migrating birds that favour this coastline. If you'd prefer you can also catch a ferry between Auckland and Coromandel Town.

Hauraki Plains

The Seabird Coast merges with the Hauraki Plains that features provincial towns with friendly locals largely involved with Dairy farming, one way or another. The hospitality of these country folk is much like the food you’ll find along your journey – it warms the heart.

Thames Coast

Thames is the entry point into one side of the peninsula and when you start cruising the Thames Coast you’ll wonder how more people don’t know about one of the most scenic roads in the world. The further along you get the better the road becomes. The road literally runs alongside the water through groves of the native Christmas tree – the pohutukawa.

If you thought this road required concentration wait until you head north of Coromandel Town to Port Jackson. The road turns to gravel and the views to the sea are even greater, as is the drop from the road. Alternatively head towards Whitianga, a hot bed of activities and iconic attractions.

Pacific Coast Highway

Follow the Pacific Coast Highway via the coastal settlements of Tairua, Whangamata and Waihi, you’ll soon see why The Coromandel warrants longer than a 2 night stay.

Hauraki Rail Trail

Don’t forget to take a trip inland through the Karangahake Gorge. A main highway navigates alongside a stony bottom river separating a steep ravine with the conservation estate either side. Swap power for pedal and bike through the Karangahake Gorge, which is the most popular leg of the Hauraki Rail Trail. The cycle from Paeroa to Waihi is breathtaking, allow plenty of time to stop and savour the homegrown food along the way.

Safety on The Coromandel roads

The roads are windy and on occasion, steep. Where possible and when safe pull over to let traffic pass. Don’t try to circumnavigate the destination in one day, stop to enjoy the fun. The Coromandel is within two hours of Auckland, Rotorua and the Hobbiton movie set.
