Heli rafting expedition on the West Coast

A day on the Whataroa river in South Westland, Franz Josef Glacier

After some major flooding during the month of January the Whataroa River has changed quite a bit making it the perfect choice for first time and seasoned rafters looking for amazing backcountry New Zealand whitewater.

There are some new big drops, and also some rapids (that were previously unrunnable because they were too dangerous) that are new for us to experience as well.

There is still a good snow pack up the valley and the river is now holding a perfect grade 4-5 level. It is also 'pool drop style' rafting making it exciting yet quite safe at the same time as there is a big rapid followed by a calm spot repeated down the river.

After a week of glorious sunshine on the coast the Whataroa has returned to it's amazing crystal clear blue water and and  combined with the awesome scenery of the dramatic gorges it has become hard to beat in the rafting industry in New Zealand.
