Rule 6 simply states: children must scream in the tunnel. Judging by the shrieks of delight that radiate from the green tunnel during each lap of the $1 ride – yes only $1 – it appears the kids are good at reading here.
Masterton is a 1.5 hour’s drive from Wellington and one of five characterful towns that make up the Wairarapa region. It’s a vibrant, family friendly town at the heart of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail.
Since 1972, it has also been the home of the popular red diesel locomotive run by a dedicated group of volunteers from the Masterton Miniature Train Society. The train runs at weekends, school holidays and public holidays between September and Queen’s Birthday weekend. If you time it right, you may also get to enjoy a ride on the black steam locomotive, which began life in Dunedin in 1925.
Afterwards walk through QE Park to the fabulous Kids Own Playground, the flying fox, mini golf and the Skate Park or stroll over the swing bridge to the Deer Park. Just along the street you'll also find Aratoi: Wairarapa Museum of Art and History; the Genesis Recreation Centre and indoor swimming pool; the Masterton i-SITE and The Wool Shed, the national museum of sheep and shearing.
