Lake Matheson: One of New Zealand's Scenic Icons

Lake Matheson is the most photographed lake in New Zealand. Capture the stunning reflections and breathtaking bush and mountain scenery.

Lake Matheson is the most photographed lake in New Zealand … and it’s no surprise why. The iconic image of New Zealand's highest peaks refected in the lake is simply breathtaking.

The Lake Matheson walking track commences between Matheson Cafe and ReflectioNZ Gifts and Gallery. There is an excellent interpretational area at the entrance to the walk, offering information about Lake Matheson and the flora and fauna you will encounter on your walk.

The Lake Matheson walkway offers infinite opportunities to capture New Zealand’s highest peaks (Aoraki/ Mt Cook and Mt Tasman), native birds, flowers, ferns and picture perfect reflections. Winding through ancient native rainforest, the nature walk offers you a tranquil journey through winding bush to the tune of bird song. The best time to capture a perfect reflection is at dawn or dusk, before there is any breeze.

The walkway has three viewing platforms, each offering a different perspective and breathtaking reflections. The full circuit around the lake takes approximately 1 – 1 ½ hours. However, a shorter option is to do the return walk Jetty View Point. This takes approximately 30 minutes and is graded for wheelchair access.

Lake Matheson is at the heart of Glacier Country. Situated 6km west of the Fox Glacier township and just a 25 minute drive from Franz Josef Glacier this scenic icon is not to be missed.
