Mount Maugnanui is one of those places that are just perfect for families. It really is New Zealand's quintessential beachside retreat with its many surf shops, beachside cafes, ice-cream stands and pristine life-guarded beach.
I'd most certainly recommend a visit here during the summer months - just don't forget your swimming costumes!
My Top 5 Family Activities in Mt Maunganui
Here are my top picks for what to do as a family when heading to 'The Mount,' as affectionately known by the locals.
If you've not sailed before, you've got to try it. But before heading out at the mercy of the sea, why not try it on land. A friend have mine has tried it and says that it was brilliant fun. This company offers part-day trips suitable for families with children over 8 years old. Check it out.
If you’re an adventurous family, then this has got to be top of the list. In the heart of the sunny Bay of Plenty, Spring Loaded Adventures has a number of different adventure activities on offer. Activities include extreme jet boating, four-wheel driving and even a scenic helicopter ride over the beautiful scenery! If you don't have a hire care, no worries, they offer free buses from Tauranga. This place is open all year round.
3. Master the Mount
You can't take a trip to The Mount without taking advantage of its no.1 natural attraction! Head up the Mount for amazing views and a slightly less action-packed family adventure. With an average walking time of about 30-45 minutes to the top - why not take a picnic? They even have benches too.
We know that kids love wildlife! Enjoy an educational and fun family day out at Marshalls Animal Park just down the road in Tauranga. Some of the furry residents include your more usual farm animals along with some more exotic creatures - our wee ones favourites are the African Ostrich and Miniature Horses!
When the animals become part of the scenery, so to speak, the kids won't be short of entertainment with opportunities to feed and play with a play park and flying fox.
Prices are reasonable and family passes are available
Located in Te Puke, 20 minutes from The Mount, this tour company takes you on a tour around the amazing Kiwi orchards at Kiwi360. You'll be guided around the landscapes in one of the KiwiKarts by a tour guide who will tell you of the kiwifruit growing process and the industries success story. The guides are very upbeat and really entertaining for the children.
A fun and interesting day for the whole family where you can enjoy a unique "all-kiwi" experience. There's also a cafe and shop on site so why not make an afternoon of it!
