New fishing licence categories in New Zealand

New Zealand Fish and Game have released a full season non-resident fishing licence

Fish and Game, the New Zealand government department responsible for the issuing of fishing licenses, have introduced a new license type – for non-resident anglers.

So, for this upcoming season there are two licenses available:

The 24 hour license comes at a cost of NZ $25 per angler, per day. There is no minimum or maximum number of days you can purchase the 24 hour license and it is the same cost for resident and non-resident anglers.

You can also purchase a whole season license, unless you’re a permanent resident of New Zealand, you will need to purchase the non-resident season license at a cost of NZ $160 per angler for the entire season. This is only slightly more than Kiwi residents pay (NZ $123)

The non-resident season license can also be endorsed to enable the angler to fish designated back country or controlled fisheries at no extra charge. The backcountry endorsement is needed in some parts of New Zealand – such as Central Otago, but not the Nelson/Marlborough/West Coast fishery.

Unlike a lot of fishing licenses from other parts of the world, the entire proceeds from the license go to support and management of the New Zealand fishery. Indeed, the revenue gained from non-resident licenses has been ring-fenced and dedicated to management of our backcountry fisheries.
