Four of New Zealand's Most Spectacular Golf Courses

Shaped by unique natural elements, New Zealand’s golf courses are some of the most scenic in the world.

Imagine teeing off beneath soaring mountain peaks on a course professionally designed to make the most of the local terrain. There’s a turquoise alpine lake to your left, and fields of golden tussock to your right. You’d be forgiven for thinking that this is some kind of golfer’s dream – but in New Zealand, golfing experiences exactly like this one are a reality.

New Zealand golf is shaped by nature. Dramatic holes and championship courses show off diverse landscapes – 18 holes here takes longer than usual because players can’t help but take their time to soak up the magnificent environment. Team this with architecturally designed clubhouses as well as world-class food and wine experiences, and you’ve got a uniquely New Zealand golfing holiday that you’ll remember for years to come.

We’re a bunch of keen kiwi golfers here at First Light Travel, and we love to mix things up for our international guests; combining iconic championship courses with local clubs that we consider to be hidden gems. The result is a golfing holiday that can only be experienced in New Zealand.

Here’s a taste of some of our favourite courses – where a quality game can be played, and a spectacular landscape experienced.

Kauri Cliffs

This par 72 course sits high above Northland’s coastline, showcasing spectacular cliff top views and secluded coves. Here, 15 of the holes face the Pacific Ocean while the other 3 wind through forest and marsh.

Cape Kidnappers

Currently ranked number 33 on Golf Digest’s list of ‘World’s Top 100 courses,’ Cape Kidnappers is a par 71 course that will challenge golfers of all skill levels. Built on a ridge and valley landscape, this is one of the most difficult – but also most rewarding – golfing experiences in New Zealand.

The Hills

Set in a rugged glacial valley surrounded by sky-scraping mountains, The Hills offers a golfing experience that’s second-to-none. Fields of golden mountain tussock complement the natural beauty of the course’s waterways, lakes and wetlands.

Jack’s Point

Sandwiched between Queenstown’s Remarkables mountain range and beautiful Lake Wakatipu, Jacks Point was deliberately designed to work in harmony with its natural environment. The result is a very natural golfing experience that runs right to the edge of the lake.
