Queenstown is not just for the snow lover and adrenaline junkies. In fact a large proportion of the towns tourists come purely to see the stunning surroundings and explore its many other-worldly features. As well as the natural environment, there is plenty of fun things to do in Queenstown and its surrounding areas. Have a read of my suggestions as to how to spend your time when visiting Queenstown.
My Top 5 Activities For the Young at Heart in Queenstown
Enjoy a relaxing day out enjoying the magnificent scenery and local wines with this day long guided tour. The tour begins with a leisurely morning walk along the lakeshore and through the forest of native flora and fauna and observe the beautiful native birds. Following this walk you are taken to some of the most wellknown boutique vineyards in the area to indulge in the luxurious wine and gourmet food. Although it is a long day (starting at 8am and arriving back at 5pm), it is a fabulous way to enjoy the qualities which make Queenstown such a popular tourist destination.
Arrowtown is an historic gold-mining town which encompasses it rich history in the towns physical features. Only a 10 minute drive from Queenstown Arrowtown is a popular place amongst tourists who are visiting the area, and welcomes them with open arms.
The little town has loads to offer, with a number of eateries and shops to visit as well as a museum sharing the amazing history of the areas connections to the gold-mining industry. A visit to Arrowtown never fails to impress and it's a nice escape from the often buzzing streets of Queenstown.
I always like to include an activity that is purely dedicated to relaxation in these blogs - there is so much to see and do when travelling, it's important to take some time out to just unwind. So when in Queenstown I suggest the best place to do this is at Onsen, Queenstowns only private indoor/outdoor hot pools.
Overlooking breathtaking views of the Shotover River, the pools are high up on the cliffs so as to make sure you are enjoying the scenery while soaking. Another stand-out quality is their retractable picture windows, which makes it easy for you to convert your pool room from indoor to outdoor as your own leisure. So no matter the weather or temperature outside, it is a fabulous way to relax during your trip.
When staying in Queenstown I suggest dedicating some time to visit the fascinating neighbouring region of Fiordland - world renowned for its waterfalls, lakes and popular walking tracks. A great way to see the area is on a scenic cruise through Milford Sound.
Departing from Queenstown, the day long tour starts with a coach journey across the Southern Alps with some scenic stops along the way, arriving at Milford Sound where you board the cruise. The 2 hour long cruise then takes you on an unforgettable trip through the Sound, the highlight being a viewing of Mitre Peak - glacier-scarred rock walls and waterfalls. While it is slightly on the pricey side, it's a fantastic day out which is all planned for you in advance, so all you need to do it turn up and enjoy the ride!
What better way to absorb the first-class views than by gondola? The journey starts in central Queenstown and takes you up Bob's Peak, where you can enjoy a meal at the award winning restaurant. Also up there is access to some scenic walking tracks and if you're feeling adventurous, why not make your way back down via the luge! The perfect blend of adventurous and scenic, the gondola and its complementary activities makes the most of all that Queenstown is so well known for.
