Short bike rides in Taupo

You don't have to be a pro to enjoy riding in Taupo - there are rides to suit all ages and abilities

Some people think you need to be an “expert” to enjoy off-road biking in New Zealand – not true!

This is the first article we’re writing to let travelers know about some of the excellent trail rides available around New Zealand that are suited to all ages and abilities.

If you’re visiting Taupo, there are lots of short, gentle rides that take in spectacular scenery and some of the area’s thermal attractions.

Our top three picks:

Craters of the Moon

A popular biking area that caters to all ages and abilities with well formed trails. Highlights include beautiful views of the Waikato River and Lake Taupo.

Huka Falls Trails

These are great trails for “novice” riders that follow the banks of the Waikato River as it flows into the spectacular Huka Falls. If you ride all three trails, it’s a total of 30km return but there you can choose to just ride one or two trails if you’re looking for a gentle experience.

The Lion’s Walk

This trail follows the Lake Taupo shoreline and is a 10km return journey from the town’s boat ramp along to Wharewaka Point.

This trail is shared with walkers and is fantastic for families – the grade is gentle enough for young children to enjoy.

For more information about any of these trails, visit the isite when you reach Taupo – they can provide maps and advice to suit your specific requirements.

Happy riding!
