Skiing & snowboarding in Tekapo

A more laid back option for skiing in the South Island of New Zealand, less queues & more time to enjoy the powder. Great for families and couple retreats!

Often overshadowed by the more popular resorts of Queenstown and Wanaka, the often quieter slopes at Tekapo are well worth a visit on your South Island ski holiday. Ideally placed en-route between Christchurch and the Southern ski slopes, Tekapo is a small town with a lot of character.

The Skiing

You’ve got two options: Round Hill & Mount Dobson.

Roundhill is the most popular choice in the area, only 20-30 minutes from Tekapo Village and ideal for families and learners with gentle wide slopes. My favourite thing about this slope is the amazing view of Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo.

A little further away is Mount Dobson an excellent ski area for families with the largest learner area in New Zealand. Don’t think it’s just for beginners however, this slope also have brilliant powder conditions for the more advanced skier and snowboarder.

The Apres-Ski

Whilst skiing’s the reason to go, we all know that it’s the après-ski scene and non-ski day activities that really sell a destination. As I think I said before, Tekapo is certainly not a cosmopolitan resort, but being smaller certainly has its benefits – including but not limited to, no traffic or waiting to get in to restaurants and an all round more peaceful ski experience.

My choice of restaurants would be;

Kohan Japanese Restaurant – Perhaps the meanest sashimi in the central South Island, Kohan makes a great change to the usual southern delights on offer at other places in Tekapo.

McKenzie’s Cafe and General Store – A quirky store offering local merino products as well as a great flat white and afghan too! Well worth a visit for a coffee during your stay.
For activities here are my two favourites;

Earth and Sky Tours – If there’s one thing you can be sure of in Tekapo and that’s very little light pollution, hundreds of km’s from the nearest city – just looking up at the sky on your own is impressive enough. For a blow away experience, join John on one of his night time star gazing tours and learn a thing or two about our expansive universe.

Alpine/Tekapo Springs is a must visit when in the area. With a hot pools, a day spa, tube park and skating ring – whether you are looking for a relaxing or energetic day off the slopes – you can’t go far wrong. The kids will love playing around in the tube park for hours on end whilst you can enjoy putting your feet up and resting the aches in the pools.
