The entire Hawkes Bay region is well known for its culture, weather and great wineries. Napier is located on the East Coast of the North Island, 320km from Wellington. With almost the highest sunshine hours of any city in New Zealand, the location is fairly warm and dry year-round.
Napier has plenty of attractions for wine connoisseurs. There are many award-winning wineries and vineyards in the region along with biking tours of the area, and the New Zealand Wine Centre. There are a range of activities and places to visit for those who love wine or simply want to learn more.
There are also a few events each year related to wine. The annual Mission Concert, held in The Mission Vineyards is always hugely popular. Famous musicians such as Eric Clapton and Rod Stewart have played here in previous years. This event alone is reason enough to visit Napier.
There are many free year-round attractions in Napier:
Art deco: Because of the 1931 earthquake, Napier extensively rebuilt in the Art Deco style which was popular in the period. Now, the town is one of the most iconic in the world for the architecture. There are tours available to explore the streets, running every day for free. There are also pamphlets available if you want to map your own tour.
City walking trails: Napier walking trails guide you through the real culture of the city. Whether you like art and craft, heritage buildings or antique shopping, there are great resources available to visit the sites.
Pania of the Reef: Pania of the Reef is a Maori mythological figure and is displayed as a bronze statue on the waterfront in Napier. The statue is a very popular tourist attraction and is a great place to have a stop while wandering Marine Parade.
Art Gallery and Museum
The Hawke’s Bay Museum and Art Gallery are currently undergoing major re-development but when the reopen in 2013 they will be well worth a visit. The two house extensive collections of Maori taonga, books, photos, maps and information from the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake.
The National Aquarium in Napier has a vast array of aquatic life. Many native fish, reptiles and plants are housed here, and also many international and tropical fish. There is a great oceanarium here too, with a tunnel underneath so you can walk through and see the fish and sea mammals swimming above.
