Surf Highway 45 - Roadside Stories

A Manatū Taonga audio guide to Taranaki's Surf Highway

Check out the Ministry for Culture and Heritage's audio guide to Surf Highway in the Video tab.

Dubbed Surf Highway 45, the coastal road between Hāwera and New Plymouth is famed for its surf breaks, which include Stent Road, Spot X and the Kūmara Patch. Taranaki locals have ridden the waves since the 1950s, and some became international champions. The region has also produced a number of surfboard designers.
