1. Trout fishing
The Taupo region is renowned for some of the world’s best trout fishing. 2. Huka Falls
The mighty waters of the Waikato River gush through a narrow 20 metre gap which forms Huka Falls. There is up to 220,000 litres of water pouring through every second, which can be heard with a thunderous roar as the water spills through the gorge. Visitors can view the falls from the various viewing platforms alongside the river or have the option of an exhilarating jet boat ride or scenic river cruise to see the falls up close and personal.

If you are into golf, Taupo makes choosing difficult with five first class golf courses, including the Wairaeki International Golf Course. There is no need to worry about weather disrupting your game as the quick draining volcanic soil means that rain hardly spoils play here.

With more than 70km of off-road tracks, mountain biking enthusiasts will love Taupo and its surrounds. Tracks range from mild to challenging and are all accompanied by amazing scenery. There are a number of companies offering bike hire or guided rides.

Taupo is located in the Central Plateau Volcanic Zone which is an area filled with geothermal activity. Craters of the Moon is a walk with a difference. It visits bubbling craters, mud pools and steams vents, explosion craters and colourful soils. You will also see interesting plants that have adapted to thrive in the hot steamy conditions.
