The Great Coast Road is a must do for any visitor to the West Coast and possibly the most unrated attraction in the area. It follows the coastline with the might of the Tasman Sea on one side and tropical rain forest on the other. There are hugh craggy rocks, rocky outcrops covered in starfish and mussels, occasional seal colonies and plenty of bird life.
Along the main state highway there are numerous opportunities to safely pull of the road and access one of the beaches. Each beach is different - some stoney, some sandy, some a mixture of both. There are towering cliffs and typical NZ vegetation. On the section between Rapahoe and Barrytown the beaches afford fabulous views back to the south and on a clear day you see the expanse of the snow capped Southern Alps and the majestic Mt Cook and Mt Tasman.
Best thing of all - this is all free you just need to take some time.
Stunning absolute beachfront location with superb sea views. Breakers offers four ensuite double rooms all overlooking the sea. Homemade pizza/antipasto platter, NZ beer/wine available until 7pm. Free wifi. Relax to the sound of the breaking waves.
