My husband and our three children have been long overdue for a family holiday for some time now but have always found it hard to get away and trying to co-ordinate jobs, school holidays and pre-schoolers! HOWEVER, we finally made it down to Wanaka this winter as we both really wanted to get the kids to learn to ski.
We flew direct from Auckland to Queenstown and decided to hire a car for simplicity’s sake – and it was only an hour’s drive over the most stunning landscape. A friend of ours suggested staying at Edgewater, having stayed there herself with kids and it was just perfect. We got a self contained 2 bedroom apartment which allowed us to do our own breakfast, make our lunches to take up the mountain and then feed the little ones at night before we could enjoy a little adult time with other ‘grown-ups’ in the restaurant. I have to say the food and wine was just superb – a really neat menu of a lot of local fare and special things that you just wouldn’t be able to order in Auckland. The staff were really great too. Local knowledge is just so helpful when you’re a parent and time is never on your side!!
We ended up doing three days straight at Cardrona where, like everything else we came across, the facilities and staff were just brilliant. The people in the Wanaka region are just so genuinely friendly and hospitable! We put the children straight into ski school and took ourselves off to Captain’s Basin for some really lovely skiing – such nice snow and so great to be able to sit down for a coffee in the restaurant every time the old legs started to burn a bit!
The weather came in a bit for our last few days but it really didn’t matter. From Edgewater, there are a number of lovely lakeside trails that we took the kids walking down – and we could even hire bikes from the hotel which let us explore further afield as well. We’ve also made great friends with a number of ducks who looked rather sad when we ran out of bread scraps on our last day!
Having had such a good time (young and old!) I’m really determined to get us back to Edgewater for another holiday – and would love to see the place in the summer as well! Many thanks to the team there for a truely wonderful holiday!
