In this article we introduce the fantastic Skyline Rotorua luge.  Located just a few minutes’ drive from the centre of town, on top of Mt Ngongotaha, the Skyline Rotorua luge is a thrilling activity for people of all ages.

At the end of April 2013 Skyline Rotorua celebrated an amazing milestone – their 15 Millionth luge ride!  That is an incredible number, and shows just how popular the Rotorua luge ride has been since its opening nearly 30 years ago.

Part go-cart part toboggan, the Rotorua luge was the first in the world when it first opened in March 1985.  The unique three-wheeled luge carts are gravity fuelled and the rider has full control over speed and direction using a unique braking and steering system.  All the driver has to do is push forward on the bars to go pull back on the bars to stop.  This means anyone can do it, and it didn’t take long for the thrilling downhill ride to catch on.

Now more than 420,000 national and international visitors visit Skyline Rotorua every year, with an incredible 750,000 luge rides taken.  In fact it has been so successful that Skyline has set up luge operations in Queenstown, Singapore and Canada.

At Skyline Rotorua there are over four kilometres of thrilling luge tracks, with three different levels available.  There is a gentle pace track for beginners and littlies riding with mum or dad,  then people can move on to a two kilometre long intermediate track that includes a tunnel, and then for the thrill seekers there is the challenging advanced track with speed and tight corners providing that extra thrill.

All three tracks take you through a scenic Californian Coastal Redwood forest, and you get to enjoy a scenic chairlift back to the top.
