Queenstown region, Episode 5: Alpine grandeur & Middle‑earth™

From majestic mountains to golden plains, locations throughout the Queenstown region played the mythical world of Middle‑earth™ on the big screen.

Our Kombi Diaries journey comes to an end in the Queenstown region, known not only for its alpine grandeur, food & wine and adventure activities but also famous as a key location to play Middle‑earth™. Both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies were shot entirely in New Zealand; over 100 locations featured in the films, from Queenstown's Glenorchy and Fiordland in the south to Matamata in the north.

Many activities and tours offer the chance to experience these stunning locations yourself. If you're a Tolkien fan, there's nowhere else that comes close. Inspired to create your own ultimate New Zealand road trip? Check out our Kombi Diaries itinerary
