About

Let our story-tellers take you back to a time to when the Hokianga was a bustling harbour and Northland the centre of early colonial politics, land transactions and booming industry. James Clendon was Chairman of New Zealand's first bank, a member of the first legislative council and became the first United States Consul in New Zealand.

Following Clendon’s death in 1872, his wife Jane (who was of Hokianga Maori descent) found she was left with huge debts while supporting and educating eight children. How Jane and her family managed to keep home, family and possessions together is an impressive story.

Lived in by the family for over 100 years, the house contains the family collection with many interesting items and paintings on display.
