Our steam engine, Wa165 was built in New Zealand in 1897. Rescued from a play-ground in 1985, the GCVR Society has restored the engine to full operating condition. A 1936 passenger carriage was reconditioned and together with 3 specially converted carriages form the current steam train. Since October 2000, Wa165 has operated excursions to Muriwai, with a photo and picnic stop there of around 45 minutes, before returning to Gisborne. All departures are from the Gisborne Railway Station. More details are available at https://www.gcvr.org.nz. The GCVR workshop is open to visitors on Thursday and Saturday mornings from 9am to noon, at the corner of Customhouse Street and Awapuni Road, Gisborne.
