Pounamu (New Zealand jade) is only found on the West Coast, created under our mountains and concealed in our rivers. For this reason, Hokitika has a long-standing tradition of greenstone carving. Every day you can join a free guided tour of our jade carving workshop in Hokitika to uncover the history and heritage of West Coast carving. You'll get to meet local West Coast artists and see how they transform raw stone into carved art, discovering the different tools and techniques used to craft jade by hand. Your guide will take you on a journey into the important role pounamu plays in Maori culture, exploring its traditional uses and values and uncovering the legends with breathe life into the stone.
