This gem of a hut is praised by many as well-maintained and thought out. It sits at a high point of 790m+, not long after you finish a pleasant walk alongside the Mangahao River. The Tararua Forest is easily one of the most stunning areas we have in the North Island but often missed. And this semi-challenging hike is a perfect way to see it over a day and night. With views over the sea and mountains, Burn Hut is the perfect spot to relax deep in the bush, while enjoying a Kiwi backcountry dinner and spotting rare wildlife. Burn Hut is located in a sheltered spur – our Tararua Range is full of native wildlife, curious-looking plants and mysterious noises from deep in the bush. Why else would we have a track called “Goblin Forest”?
