Taranaki's hemispherical coast collects 180 degrees of ocean swells. You can be almost certain that the surf will be pumping between New Plymouth and Hawera.
If you've never learned to ride a wave, join a surf school or try tandem surfing (they guarantee to get you on your feet in the first session or your money back!).
But waves aren't the only reason to follow this touring route - the Taranaki/Egmont National Park is always within reach, with tracks to take you up and around magnificent Mount Taranaki. This region also has an enviable collection of galleries, artists' studios and beautifully manicured gardens.
The spectacular Surf Highway 45 is a windy road and drivers are advised to be familar with driving in New Zealand before embarking on this road trip.

Today you'll venture round the coast to Opunake. On your way, you may like to turn inland and visit Parihaka, an important place in New Zealand's history that is synonymous with peace.
The Maori people of Parihaka used peaceful resistance (such as singing songs and removing surveryors' pegs) to protest against the Crown's confiscation of their lands in the late 1800's. They were eventually overcome by the Armed Constabulary, who were stationed in Parihaka to ensure completion of the Cape Egmont Lighthouse in 1881.
Continuing towards Opunake, surfers will want to stop at Stent Road, just south of Warea, which has a nice right-hand wave over a shallow reef. Other surf spots within 10 minutes of the town include Green Meadows, Arawhata Road, Dumps and Mungas.
Non-surfers can enjoy Opunake's small-town charm and scenic beauty. Walk the 7km Opunake Walkway which ends at Te Namu pa site, once a fortified Maori village. Opunake Lake is another chance to enjoy nature, great for walking and trout fishing.
In town you can visit the Cape Egmont Replica Lighthouse & Museum and the historic Everybody's Theatre.
Si recorrés la ruta "Surf Highway 45", no podés perderte Opunake. Quedate un tiempo para disfrutar de la playa y del sendero histórico que termina en Te Namu Pa.
