Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, doesn’t disappoint! A vibrant, creative city, that’s packed with culture and energy, it’s brimming with good food, wine, and coffee to die for. All this set against the backdrop of sandy beaches and rolling hills makes Wellington a must see in New Zealand. Here are 10 free activities to check out when you visit.
 
  1. Visit Te Papa Museum
    If you visit one museum in New Zealand, it’s got to be Te Papa. Here, you can learn all about New Zealand history in a fun and interactive way. There’s incredible exhibits that will teach you all about Maori culture, the Treaty of Waitangi, the native flora and fauna and even the country’s seismic activity (you’ve got to head inside the Earthquake House to get the full effect of this one!)

  2. Walk up to Mt Victoria Lookout
    Towering 196 metres above the city, this lookout boasts panoramic views of Wellington city, the harbour and beyond. It’s a great spot to take a picnic and relax for a few hours.
     
  3. Check out Weta Cave
    This is one for the movie fans! Weta Workshop is where costumes and props for movies like Lord of the Ring and King Kong were made, and if you want to get a sneak peek before buying tickets for a tour, Weta Cave is the place to go. Entry is free and you still get plenty of the movie magic. You can snap a selfie with life-sized sculptures, wander through the mini-museum, and watch the exclusive behind the scenes documentary!  
     
  4. Get lost in the Botanic Gardens
    The stunning Wellington Botanic Garden is just a 20-minute walk from the city centre, so there’s no excuse to miss it. You can spend all day exploring the 25 hectres of protected native forest, conifers, specialised plant collections and floral displays here. Plus, there are gorgeous views down onto Wellington City to enjoy.
     
  5. Take a dive at Taranaki Wharf
    There’s nothing quite like a good dive bomb or backflip into the ocean. In Wellington, they’ve actually created the perfect place for you to do this! Head down the Taranaki Wharf and you’ll find the eight-metre high, architecturally designed dive platform. Bombs away!
     
  6. Take a wander along the waterfront
    Stretching from Oriental Bay around to the main train station, the Wellington Waterfront makes a great walk for a sunny day. Enjoy a picnic at one of the Oriental Bay beaches, complete with beach volleyball and a swim! If you keep walking along the paved area you’ll come to Te Papa and on Saturdays, a local market full of goodies.
     
  7. Visit Cuba Street
    The iconic shopping and eating street of the city, Cuba Street THE place to come to get a taste of Wellingtons culture and creative influences. Lined with funky shops and some of the best cafes in the area, it’s the perfect place to come for a bite and some people watching. You can spend hours wandering around here. Make sure you check out the famous bucket fountain, a sculpture consisting of multiple buckets that fill with water and eventually tip over!
