A is for Amberley

Located at the southern end of the Hurunui district and only 45 minutes from Christchurch’s International Airport.

Amberley is where I grew up...

Named after Amberley in Derbyshire in England, Amberley was founded during the 1860’s. The township has continued to grow and is now a substantial service town for agriculture and viticulture.

Amberley is an ideal country retreat with an 18hole golf course, beach and forest walks and the nearby Waipara Valley wine region all on its doorstep. You can find a bed to fit any budget - B&B’s, motels, campgrounds and a luxury lodge.

Amberley is also one for the foodie’s. There is an extensive range of restaurants and cafes, including the award winning Nor'Wester Cafe, providing a variety of choices for everyone’s taste buds. One of my favourites is the caramel oat slice from Pukeko Junction Cafe.

For the first time the Waipara Valley Farmers Market, held each Saturday, will continue through the winter months. The market is held outside the Hurunui District Council and includes producers from all over the Hurunui district. Make sure you bring your own shopping bag and plenty of cash (sorry no EFTPOS). Check it out sun, rain, snow or wind.

Amberley is a great base if you are looking for a change of scene. It’s under an hour to Hanmer Springs, about 2 hours to Kaikoura, and only 45 minutes to Christchurch.

Why not use Amberley as your base for day trips or as your first/last night of your holiday.
