In the 1920s wealthy American author Zane Grey visited - and wrote about - Urupukapuka Island in the Bay of Islands. A keen big-game fisherman, Grey caught a 400-pound broadbill swordfish, and wrote a best-selling book that encouraged others to follow in his footsteps. Today the area remains popular for big-game fishing.
