Cycling the Queen Charlotte Track

The Queen Charlotte Track is the longest single track in New Zealand and is open to bikers year round.

I could wax on lyrically how the Queen Charlotte Track is a mountain biker's paradise offering visually stunning and varied terrain, with sections suitable for the novice rider whilst also being challenging enough for the experienced mountain biker.

I could also tell you that it is regarded as on of New Zealand's best singletrack moutnain bike rides and became the 21st Great Ride on the Nga Haerenga New Zealand Cycle trail in March 2013.

I am not, however, a mountain biker so will leave the technical aspects to someone more qualified but when it comes to getting you and your bike, to and from the track, Beachcomber Cruises, based on the Picton Waterfront are the experts.

We are a family owned and operated specialist Queen Charlotte cruise and transfer company who takes pride in maintaining our boats and as such understand the importance of taking care of your gear - especially your bike. On-board we have bike racks to properly secure your bike during its journey to and from the track, away from potential scratch hazards such as packs and suitcases, it may seem simple but not every company does this.

Another aspect that makes the Queen Charlotte Track so compelling to walkers and bikers alike is that you don't have to carry your pack. Beachcomber Cruises can transfer your pack by boat to your destination each day which is especially convenient given the terrain is too rough for the easy carriage of panniers for bikes. Two days are needed by most riders of reasonable fitness to complete the entire track comfortably but with a range of accommodation types available, from basic DOC campsites to luxury lodges, extending your journey to 3-4 days is always a desirable option! Whatever you decide to do your friendly Beachcomber skipper will be waiting for you at the end of your journey to bring you and your gear safely back to Picton.

Our Great Track & Pack Pass at $99 pp is the easy no fuss option for bikers (and walkers) and includes; a drop off at Ship Cove (the beginning of the track) on one of our three scheduled boats, a pick up from Anakiwa at 3.30pm and free luggage (20kg limit) transfers along the track. Bikes are transported at an additional cost of $5 per bike/per way. Please note that from time to time we do offer special pricing for bikers - just contact Beachcomber Cruises directly.

We hope you choose to travel with Beachcomber Cruises because we understand that sometimes the journey is everything!
