If you enjoy hiking then ensure you include Reefton on your itinerary even if for just a quick stopover and leg stretch.
In the beautiful West Coast Native forest - some of the greenest forest in the land - there are numerous hikes for all ages and fitness abilities. Most of the trails are following old tram tracks from the gold and coal mining days of the 1800s and 1900s with lots of remnants from the mines left to be discovered in the bush. The forest itself can be like walking in an enchanted forest - so lush and green.
Murrays Creek track at Blacks Point on the outskirts of Reefton is a great place to start your adventure, following the creek up deep into the forest giving you some great elevation and great views. Numerous tracks lead off the Murrays Creek trails - down to the Waitahu Valley, Ajax Mine, Energetic Mine and Lankey Creek Tram Track or the Konini Pack Track back to Reefton township.
Check out the Department of Conservation website for a list of their trails. Alternatively,Jan and Stephen from Breakers Boutique Accommodation on the Great Coast Road north of Greymouth are often out and about exploring the West Coast and sharing their adventures through their blog CoastingNZ.
