Soak up the laid-back lifestyle, stroll on the beach and eat fresh seafood for dinner – the Coromandel is a great place to relax and enjoy unspoilt coastal living at its best. Beaches here range from perfectly formed, secluded coves to long stretches of rolling waves and windswept coastline. You’ll find native Pohutukawa Trees everywhere here; during summer they turn into a riot of colour when they bloom bright red flowers. One of New Zealand’s most popular holiday destinations, many come to the Coromandel to enjoy long, sun kissed days at the beach, catching waves and collecting seashells till it’s time to shower the sand off for a wine at sunset.
Here at MoaTrek, we love visiting the Coromandel and its beautiful coastline – here’s a few of our favourite beaches in the area.
Accessible only on foot or by boat, Cathedral Cove is home to a huge archway carved by the sea over thousands of years. The archway divides two small, perfect coves – a real slice of kiwi paradise. Sandy white beaches, interesting rock formations and an array of walking tracks make this cove the perfect place to bring a picnic and explore.
Hot Water Beach
Just around the corner is Hot Water Beach, where natural mineral water bubbles up from deep within the earth. When the tide is right, beach goers dig their own hot pool metres from the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy a relaxing soak before strolling the long, sandy beach to find the perfect spot for some sunbathing or a picnic.
Beautiful Hahei beach is the perfect place for swimming and walking. Offshore islands provide a breakwater, creating a calm, tranquil beach that’s home to drifts of bright pink shells. These islands are home to caves and archways and form the boundaries of a marine reserve.
