If like me, you love wine, food and cheese – then you’ll be delighted by Tranzit’s Martinborough Gourmet Wine Tour, at the heart of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail.
On offer is a full guided winery experience with four cellar doors, included wine tastings, delicious platters, coffee and transport. You do not need to be a wine connoisseur to appreciate this tour (although a palate for wine would help!)
It took us just over an hour’s journey from Wellington with a nice blend of train and coach travel and jaw dropping scenery. Our tour had eight on board and our guide, Pam (quite the wine enthusiast herself) was fabulously entertaining and informative.
We visited 4 wineries; each diverse in size and style. One thing they had in common was a passion for sharing their knowledge and winemaking process. First stop was Murdoch James Estate, a family owned vineyard opened in 1986. I fell for their fabulous Trafalgar, a mixture of sauvignon and riesling. It was our first vineyard and already I was leaving with 2 bottles!
The next stop was Muirlea Rise, a small and intimate winery. I adored the very kiwi cellar door experience here and the chance to taste grapes straight from the vines - an absolute mouth-watering experience. Lunch in the charming Martinborough Village was next; on the menu was a 5 star antipasto platter, caesar salad and glass of wine.
After lunch we visited the final two wineries of the day, Schubert and a personal favourite of mine Te Kairanga (TK). The cellar door experience at Schubert was most enjoyable, for one of the younger wineries in Martinborough (established in 1998), very passionate about its history. At TK we were blessed with a table in the sun and more great wine!
A fabulous finish to the day included cheese platters and coffee back at the Village Cafe before we’re off again to catch the relaxing train back to Wellington.
I could not have asked for a better day out to one of New Zealand’s prominent wine regions. Martinborough is renowned for its rich pinot noir so which was my favourite? Too hard!
But I now have a fine collection of both red and white Martinborough wines. There are plenty of opportunities to purchase wine throughout the day. Good luck leaving empty-handed! Full details on the great tour visit www.tranzittours.co.nz.
