Rotorua is a world famous destination for Maori culture, thermal activity and bubbling mud, but there is nothing better to do in Rotorua than jump on a bike!
Mountain Biking through some of the top tracks in the world
Rotorua’s best kept secret is the mountain biking trails the locals have been enjoying for decades. Word is getting out that our endless array of trails (over 130km), for riders of all abilities are the best in the Southern Hemisphere, in other words, you must try them! You can hire a bike from the forest, or bring your own, and let loose for a few hours, an afternoon, or a few days. Many world class mountain bikers visit Rotorua, including for the World Mountain Biking Championships held on these very trails.
Take a leisurely cruise through the city on a street cruiser
Hire a bicycle for you or the whole family from one of our cycling spots, or these are available at Rotorua motels such as Silver Fern Accommodation & Spa. Take to the streets of Rotorua and explore the city on bicycle, including a visit to Government Gardens, the Rotorua Lakefront, and Kuirau Park.
Test out the roads on a road bike
Enter one of the road cycling events held in Rotorua every year, including Ibis Bike the Lake, and the Rotorua-Taupo 100k flyer, which is taking on the roads between Rotorua and Taupo. These road cycling events are popular and fill up fast, so get your entry in and get your visit to Rotorua booked.
Boost the adrenalin with BMX
Home to some world champion and Olympic BMX riders, Rotorua punches above its weight in the BMX scene. With one of the biggest BMX tracks in New Zealand, you have got to try it if in town. Team it up with an afternoon on the trails, or follow it with a soak in one of the regions many hot pools, such as Polynesian Spa.
The Annual Bike Festival
Rotorua is so in love with biking in all forms, it now hosts the annual Rotorua Bike Festival, held each year for 10 days in February. The action packed 10 days includes over 30 events, and everything from Frocks on Bikes, the Redwoods Coast (no pedals), Bike Polo, Family Fun Rides, Tykes on Trikes, and the Skyline Sprint Warrior. If you are a biking fan, book your summer holiday in Rotorua during the festival.
If you are bringing your bike with you on your travels, make sure you book in to bike friendly accommodation such as Silver Fern Accommodation & Spa, with on site, lock-up bike storage you can have peace of mind when you are not out pedalling.
