Punakaiki's Pancake Rocks and Blowholes are an amazing feature of the Great Coast Road on the West Coast. Located 30kms north of Greymouth there is an easy paved path around the rock formations, aptly named due to their resemblence of staked pancakes.
The trail takes a minimum of 20 minutes to walk around - all depending on how many information boards you read and photos you take. If the blowholes are working then this can be quite mesmerizing and you'll need to allow much more time to take it all in.
To get the blowholes at their best you need to time your visit for around 1 hour before high tide to get the force of water surging into the rocks. Perfect if there has been a big swell for a more dramatic effect. In saying that the rocks formations are a fantastic feature in their own right so don't be disappointed not to see any blowhole action.
Make sure you allow time to include the Great Coast Road, Punakaiki and the Pancake Rock formations in your itinerary for your visit to New Zealand and the West Coast.
