Taupo activities over winter: enjoy the hotpools

Taupo has a range of thermal and geothermally-heated hotpools. This article will help you decide which hotpools are best suited for your own requirements.

The beautiful Taupo region is famous for adventure sports with the lake, rivers, mountains and ski-fields all nearby.  If you don’t feel like racing down a mountain on skis or a mountain bike there is still much to enjoy in and around Taupo.

We now have three thermal pool complexes offering a great way to relax and unwind.  Wairakei Terraces have just opened a stunning new thermal outdoor area with rockpools and waterfalls, whilst DeBretts thermal pools and spa has been a long-time favourite for locals and tourists alike.  The AC Baths is run by the local council and has heated indoor and outdoor pools.  Each facility has something unique to offer and so will be suited to different peoples’ requirements.

Wairakei Terraces thermal pools are primarily for soaking and relaxing in.  There is a massage service provided and the setting is very serene with ferns and rocks and even a waterfall.  Children under 14 are not permitted so noise is kept down and there are no water activities for kids.  The water is thermal so you should not put your head under.  If you want a thermal soak and a massage in the quietest possible setting then this is a good option.

If you want a good thermal hotpool experience and have kids with you, then DeBretts is your best option.  There are full massage and spa facilities for unwinding in a natural setting, but also good facilities for kids too.  These include freshwater pools they can put their heads under as well as a hydroslide and a kids play area.  There are also places for family gatherings and meals.

Taupo’s AC Baths have small private thermal pools that can be quite expensive if you are in a group, but the main attraction is the big swimming complex that has connected indoor and outdoor pools, hydroslides and also 25mtr indoor and outdoor swimming lanes.  This is a good option if you have a family and want to have fun not worrying about the kids putting their heads under the water or if you want to swim for fitness.

DeBretts and Wairakei Terraces have more atmosphere and are uniquely New Zealand, whereas AC Baths must be one of the best municipal swimming pools of any town in NZ.  Taupo has something for everyone and we are happy to help guests decide on what to do and see whilst here, in many cases we have discounts for local attractions such as hotpools too.
