New Zealand's 2012 ski season is off to a great start, with loads of snow at Mt Hutt just in time for opening day. And it keeps on falling!
Mt Hutt opened up to skiers on the 9th June, after a massive dump in the days before which turned the mountain from a brown desolate hill to a snowy paradise in a few hours. It snowed in the town of Methven and even Christchurch got a few cm's. With the Mt Hutt Kids Stay & Ski Free Deal, the school holidays will be going off. A 97cm before July 1st is an amazing start and all the people getting fresh lines will attest to that!
Down in Queenstown and Wanaka the start has not been quite as amazing, but some cold temperatures and a few natural falls enabled Coronet Peak, Cardrona and the Remarkables to open on time. A big 30cm dump on 25th June is much welcomed and will see the opening of more terrain. Treble Cone will open on June 28th, and as usual will be the pick of the mountains on powder days once its up and running.
There are loads of package options for last minute ski holidays and for the best snow conditions in late July and August. Stay up to date with the latest snow news on Facebook, where I'll share the best of the news and weather updates from the NZ ski resorts.
