For those of you that are unfamiliar with the term (like us here at Bella Vista Motels) it’s basically a modern day treasure hunt, using your phone or GPS to navigate you to a geocache location. From there you have to find the hidden cache using the clues provided. Once found you sign the logbook, log your find, some swap trinkets and voilà you’re hooked and moving on to the next one.
Bill and Sandra explained they stumbled across geocaching while looking after their grandchildren one weekend, since then they have been visiting new places far and wide to locate their next treasures. The semi-retired pair get out and about as much as time allows, using the Bella Vista motel locations to determine their next home away from home destination – we loved hearing this.
Exploring unexpected places they would never otherwise know about (away from your typical tourist spots) gives them quite a thrill. With highlights so far being searching a hidden bush in Taupo for hours before finally laying their hands on a well-hidden cache, exploring the Green Lake in Rotorua, a river sanctuary in Napier and some ‘real doozers’ in Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier.
“We’re by no means experts in geocaching terms, but it’s given us a completely new appreciation for life and we love finding hidden gems around New Zealand”. Bill explained that the pair plan to continue exploring different locations and find the Bella Vista chain very handy in allowing this to happen. Geocache expeditions so far for Bill and Sandra have seen the couple exploring:
- Rotorua, with their Rotorua accommodation being Bella Vista Motel Rotorua
- Taupo, with their Taupo accomodation being Bella Vista Motel Taupo
- Napier, with their Napier accommodation being Bella Vista Motel Napier
- Franz Josef, with the Franz Josef accommodation being Bella Vista Motel Franz Josef
- With their next adventure planned for Te Anau in April this year.
As far as having enough geocaches to find, they have no issues with thousands hidden around New Zealand and more than a million worldwide. Cheers Bill and Sandra for the story. Your next geocache overnight stay is on us.
