Top Motorhome Travel Tips

Make the most of your motorhome holiday with these tips for safety and convenient travel in New Zealand.

Getting started

Make sure you have booked a vehicle to suit your travel requirements. Companies such as Apollo Motorhome Holidays offer a 6-berth Euro Deluxe which includes on-board kitchen, shower and toilet, has ample storage and a variety of sleeping configurations.

Ensure you read the terms and conditions carefully before you pick up, and fully understand ALL charges and fees, including bond and liability reduction.

Do your research on the best routes, your ‘must-do’ sightseeing spots and good freedom camping or holiday park locations – remember to book for peak seasons.

If you are not used to driving on the left hand side of the road, familiarise yourself with New Zealand’s road laws before picking up your vehicle.

On pick up

Allow time to be properly briefed on your rental vehicle. Make sure you know how everything works, and test things like hot water, TV/DVD players and stoves. If you are hiring baby or child booster seats, ensure they are properly fitted.

Before you depart each location, ensure all your luggage is securely stowed, and double-check drawers and cupboards are locked shut – they can easily fly open while driving.

Be flexible – be willing to take an unplanned road if it looks interesting, you may just find a fantastic travel experience. Remember to stick to the speed limits on each road.

Keep the vehicle clean as you go. A dust pan and broom, outdoor mat and/or bucket of water for dirty feet, and disposable kitchen and bathroom cleaning wipes are worth using.

Dropping off your vehicle

Before you return your motorhome to the branch, make sure you have emptied any grey waste at a proper dump station. Do an initial clean inside, making note of any damage or lost items, and if the vehicle is very dirty, invest in a professional exterior wash. Fill up the fuel tank before you return. This will ensure you do not lose any of your bond deposit.
