Whale and Dolphin Watching meets Scientific Research

Whales and dolphins can be seen all around New Zealand with many populations being close to the coast and accessible to both locals and tourists.

At Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari, the team combines whale and dolphin watching with marine research to bring you an ecotourism experience with a difference.

The crew on board the Dolphin Explorer are qualified Marine Biologists, passionate in protecting the marine environment of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park AND sharing that passion with their passengers.

Since the year 2000, passengers from all over the world have been boarding the Dolphin Explorer hoping to tick off seeing a dolphin or whale in the wild from their bucket list. Alongside these excited passengers, crew and researchers are conducting scientific studies to ensure that future passengers are able to enjoy the same incredible marine life of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.

An abundance of Masters and PhD level studies have been completed with the help of Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari providing spaces on board their daily safaris to local researchers and their students with whom passengers are freely able to watch, converse with and learn about the current research on the unique wildlife in Auckland’s waters.

Whilst ‘whale and dolphin’ is in the company name, the team helps to collect data in other areas of the marine ecosystem too! A full educational commentary about the area and the temperate marine ecosystem is provided for passengers whilst on safari who are also able to see data collection of other marine life such as plankton and seabirds being carried out - all in one afternoon!
