Tairawhiti's unique mix of heritage, traditions and natural beauty make it a region abounding with diverse scenic highlights.

Tairawhiti's Te Urewera is the largest wilderness forest in New Zealand and is home to a world of pristine lakes, mountains and forests. If being fully immersed in nature sounds like you, head to this wilderness playground and enjoy the myriad of hiking tracks, fishing opportunities and hidden waterfalls it offers. The Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk is a 4-day adventure that takes you through the best of what's on offer.

If coastal gems are of more interest, don’t miss the Tolaga Bay Wharf. A short drive from Gisborne, this is New Zealand’s longest wharf, jutting into the bay for 660m.  Locals use the wharf for fishing – rumour has it that it’s an excellent place to catch dinner.

For a touch of fascinating heritage, head to the Tikitiki Church – one of the finest Māori churches in New Zealand, built in 1924 as a memorial to soldiers from Eastland who died in World War I. The interior is extensively carved and beautifully decorated using Māori art and craft skills.
