Home to New Zealand’s premiere street art festival, Graffiato, Taupo boasts a plethora of weird and wonderful, bright and bold murals dotted along its streets and alley ways. With an ever-expanding portfolio of over 80 murals, download a street art walking map and explore the vibrant murals hidden amongst the charming back alleys of Taupo’s town centre. 

The Taupo Art Connection Art Trail showcases a passionate collection of local artists in their studio or gallery, providing a special glimpse into their work and creative inspiration. Experience a variety of media from painting, woodcarving, glass, ceramics, sculpture, photography, printmaking, mosaics to drawings and jewellery. Visits are by appointment only, so choose your artists ahead of time and book in to see these talented locals.

Experience a myriad of artistic endeavors including pottery and glassblowing at L’Arte and Lava Glass, both of which are working studios with vibrant gardens and onsite cafés.  

History and Maori culture

Given Taupo's unique geology and Maori history, it’s not surprising to see the number of artistic works that reflect local landscapes and stories of cultural significance. For a closer look into Great Lake Taupo's past, take casual stroll through the Taupo Museum or take a boat cruise out to the impressive Mine Bay rock carvings and learn the ancient story of chief Ngatoroirangi.

You will find also find many contemporary outdoor sculptures dotted around the region, depicting stories of the spiritual significance of the landscape.
