Rotorua is a melting pot of natural and cultural attractions. Enjoy the regions unique mix of bubbling mud pools, Maori heritage and spectacular lakes and forests.

From crystal-clear streams to epic mountain biking trails and explosive geysers, Rotorua has it all. For a dose of culture, head to Ohinemutu, a living Maori village on the edge of Lake Rotorua for an insight into traditional Maori life. To experience Rotorua’s volcanic and geothermal elements head to Hot Water Beach, on the shores of Lake Tarawera, a picturesque beach heated by geothermal elements. For something closer to town, take a walk around Kuirau Park, an informal public park in the city centre that’s full of bubbling, steaming and hissing geothermal activity.

Lovers of mountain biking and hiking should head to the Whakarewarewa Forest, only five minutes’ south of downtown Rotorua. Here, trails weave through lush native forest and past giant Californian Redwoods which tower 60 metres into the sky.  Once riders or hikers get above the canopy they can appreciate panoramic views of Rotorua’s lakes. Before you leave this region, make sure you experience the Haumurana Springs, the deepest natural spring in the North Island. Shot with hues of turquoise, blues and greens, explore the area on foot or on a paddleboard.
