From golden beaches, to city scapes, from geothermal pools to rich Maori culture - it's all here.
Auckland to Coromandel
After checking out Auckland city, head to the Coromandel peninsula. Golden sand beaches, lush rainforests and magnificent coastal scenery are what you can expect to find here, not to mention of course the world-famous Hot Water Beach, where hot water flows from the interior of the earth and surfaces at this beach.
Digging up your own little pool and having a soak in it is a must-do for all visitors to New Zealand.
Coromandel to Waitomo
Start with a walk along the cliff top to Cathedral Cove. You will see beautiful coastal scenery as well as the sandstone arch, which the Cathedral Cove is famous for, and the water here is perfect for a bit of kayaking or swimming.
The next morning, it’s time for another authentic kiwi experience – a visit to the famous Waitomo Caves. In this subterranean wonderland you'll discover an ancient underground labyrinth of limestone caves and grottos, which are home to thousands of shimmering glow worms and stalactites and stalagmites.
Drifting through the glow worm cave in a boat or black water rafting are just some of the options available to you for exploring this incredible underground wonder.
Next is Rotorua. Volcanic landscapes and thermal wonders dominate the landscape – geysers, hot springs and mud pools accompanied by the distinctive smell of sulphur are just some of what awaits you here. Rotorua is very rich in Maori culture and history.
Get the blood pumping the next day with white-water rafting and sledging on the Kaituna River, which boasts the 7-metre Tutua Falls.
After lunch head to the North Island’s adrenalin capital - Taupo. Skydiving is the ultimate thrill-seekers activity and with the sparkling Lake Taupo below you, there couldn’t be a better place for it.
Other activities available include walking the Tongariro Crossing (one of the most beautiful walks in the world), quad biking, golf, mountain biking, or bungy jumping over New Zealand’s longest river! In the afternoon it may be possible to take a cruise on The Barbary sailing boat to see Maori rock carvings at Mine Bay.
Finish the day with a well-deserved soak in some naturally-heated thermal rock pools which will leave you feeling relaxed and revitalized!
It’s a long, but rewarding drive to Wellington, the capital city of NZ. The journey itself is full of some fantastic views and stops, including the majestic Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom in Lord of the Rings)
The final day begins with a look around Wellington city. For museum enthusiasts, a visit to our National museum, Te Papa is highly recommended. A Lord of the Rings Tour and mountain bike hire are also available.
This itinerary is based on the Haka Tours 7 day North Island adventure tour, which is a small group tour, complete with an expert local guide.
