Bay of Plenty Food and Wine

The coastal Bay of Plenty, one of the country’s top holiday destinations for Kiwis, offers many top food and wine experiences.

If you’re after some rest and relaxation in the Bay of Plenty, visit the region’s top restaurants and wineries that make the most of the delicious locally grown products.

The region is also home to Te Puke, the ‘kiwifruit capital of New Zealand,’ where you can learn all about the special fruit that grows so well in the region.

The Bay of Plenty was named for its plentiful ‘fruit bowl’ properties and its fertile soils and warm climate are ideal for growing just about any type of produce, including the iconic kiwifruit, avocadoes and citrus fruits.

Seafood is also plentiful, and local islands are hotspots for catching crayfish and other sea delicacies.  Fresh local ingredients and local seafood are creatively prepared and served in seaside cafés, award-winning wineries and top-end restaurants.

Spend a couple hours on Saturday morning browsing the Tauranga Farmers Market where local growers, farmers and artisan food producers sell their wares.

Head towards Katikati, ‘New Zealand’s Mural town’ and stop in at Morton Estate winery for a tasting.  While the wine growing is now centred in Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough, Katikati retains an important role in Morton Estate's operation. The new winery and the bottling plant was built here in 2000.

Spend an evening dining on the decks over the water at Harbourside Restaurant.  Rich in character, the Harbourside building dates back to 1933 and Harbourside dishes are a celebration of fresh ingredients and innovative style.

Spend your Sunday relaxing at the award winning Mills Reef Winery and enjoy lunch accompanied by live music.

Mills Reef's distinctive art-deco style building boasts full winemaking and bottling facilities, a five hundred barrel cellar, an aged wine cellar and spacious wine tasting areas.  Mills Reef Wines have won over 250 medals in both national and international competitions.

Visit for more unforgettable food and wine experience in the Bay of Plenty region.
