We’re a region known for our sunshine and beaches, but the Bay of Plenty has heaps to offer in the winter months too! Although our winter temperatures are still pleasantly mild (averaging around 12 degrees C), we’ve compiled a list of winter activities to keep you warm and entertained on a two-day visit.
Morning: Take a walk
With our steady climate, a winter walk is a great way to get moving and enjoy the stunning Bay of Plenty region. The area offers numerous short walks, from 30 minute ambles to half-day hikes (or longer, if you’ve got the time!). Pack a picnic and spend the morning exploring any of the region’s great walking tracks.
Afternoon: Cultural excursion
Head indoors this afternoon to explore some of the region’s cultural attractions. Check out the gorgeous Tauranga Art Gallery, visit a historic mission house or experience New Zealand’s most travelled Maori meeting house – Mataatua Wharenui, in Whakatane.
Evening: Hot Pools
Relax this evening with a visit to one of the Bay of Plenty’s thermal pool complexes. The Mount Hot Pools houses numerous hot salt water pools including private pools for the adults and a leisure pool. In Tauranga, the Fernland Spa Thermal Mineral Springs is open until 10pm daily – perfect for a warm and relaxing end to a busy day.
Morning: Get Wet!
Get adventurous and try white water rafting, jet boating, kayaking or even surfing! Even if it does rain, a little bit of extra water won’t matter once you’re in your wetsuit and having the time of your life. Be sure to book these exciting activities in advance so you don’t miss out.
Following your adventure-packed morning you’ll need a bit of rest and relaxation. What better way than indulging in a massage or spa therapy treatment at one of the Bay’s health spa and massage providers? Mmmmm.
Evening: Dinner and a Show
Dine at one of many top quality Bay of Plenty restaurants then head along to a show, concert or festival. View the Bay of Plenty events calendar in advance to see what’s on when you’re here and to purchase your tickets ahead of time.
