Cluthe Gold Cycling & Walking Trail
73km - Intermediate 2-4 day trail
The Clutha Gold Cycling & Walking Trail is a unique heritage experience along the mighty Clutha Mata-au River. Starting from Roxburgh, this trail travels through the Beaumont Gorge branching off into the rich green valleys towards the historic gold mining town of Lawrence.
You will get the sense there are many adventurous souls who have travelled this path before – Maori, the pioneering run holders, the miners and the Chinese.
Be immersed in a tapestry of diverse landscapes from seductively rugged semi-arid dry lands through to lush green contoured farmlands. Almost two thirds of the trail travels alongside the powerful Clutha Mata Au River and its distinctive turquoise colour. And then most of all there are genuinely friendly communities who will take the time to say hello.
There are two section of the trail completed. Commissioners Flat at Lake Roxburgh down to Minzion Burn at the bottom of the Teviot Valley approximately 34kms, and Beaumont to Lawrence Township approximately 19kms. Currently the 4WD Millenium Track which traverses between the Teviot Valley and Beaumont can be used until the remainder of the track is completed.
