Over the Moon

Over the Moon Dairy in Putaruru are so passionate about cheese that they have helped to establish the New Zealand Cheese School, which bases a lot of its courses from the factory. A glass encased cheese-making room enables visitors to see the art unfold and free tastings and demonstrations are also available through their retail shop and cheese room.

Pukeatua Peak

Located on the slopes of Mt Maungatautari and specializing in goat’s milk cheeses Pukeatua Peak is dedicated to producing top-quality goat's milk cheeses including feta, haloumi, camembert, blue and hard cheeses.

Mercer and Meyer Gouda Cheese

The cheese makers from Mercer and Meyer Gouda Cheese have drawn on their Dutch heritage to create multi award-winning traditional Gouda-style cheeses - visit Mercer’s cheese maker Albert Alferink at his retail shop in Mercer or purchase Meyer Gouda cheese from the well-stocked Ghouda Cheese Shop in Hamilton.

Kaimai Cheese Company

The Kaimai Cheese Company near Matamata has a cafe and store on site, in a building that is a replica of a historic 1920s New Zealand butter factory. Visitors can watch the cheeses being made, taste samples as well as enjoy leisurely lunches or snacks.

Farmer’s Markets

Other artisan cheese-makers including Cilantro Cheese from Hamilton and Aroha Organic Goat Cheese near Te Aroha can be found at the various farmers markets each week in the region.
