The word adventure seems to go hand in hand with the city of Auckland. Even though Auckland is considered a metropolitan area, there are a number of adventure tours and activities near to the city. Some of its top adventures involve climbing to high altitudes and getting wet, so prepare for your trip accordingly.
Canyoning and Rafting Adventures
Canyonz (canyonz.co.nz) states it is New Zealand's "best canyoning adventure company." Based in Auckland, Canyonz offers tours at Sleeping God Canyon and Blue Canyons. Each has numerous waterfalls for these abseiling and rappelling adventures. Other activities you will experience on a Canyonz tour include hydro-sliding down volcanic rock chutes into natural, waterfall-filled pools, ziplining, and taking massive jumps from rocks that are hundreds of feet in the air. Tours begin between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and end around 6:00 p.m.
The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company (waitomo.com) provides another fun and adventurous activity. In business since 1987, this company is the first to offer black water rafting adventures in New Zealand. Two tours are offered that combine caving and rafting - the Black Abyss and Black Labyrinth. Each offers guests the opportunity to abseil, jump and float through New Zealand's glowworm caves at Waitomo. Tours last from three to five hours and bookings must be made at least 48 hours in advance.
Climb, Look and Leap
Auckland's Sky Walk (skywalk.co.nz) adventure attraction allows visitors to go about 630 feet into the air and maneuver around its 3-foot walkway. Better yet, combine the Sky Walk and Sky Jump adventures together and you will not only be suspended initially with no handrails, but then have the opportunity to base jump and free fall like a movie stunt person. Jumpers and sky walkers are of course securely attached to a bungee-like wire so they will get the thrilling experience, without the deathly danger.
The Auckland Bridge Climb and Bungy (bungy.co.nz) is another thrilling adventure location right in the heart of the city. Adventure-seekers climb for about two hours to the top of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and take in the 360-degree views of the city and its surroundings. If you are brave enough, you can then bungee from 200 feet in the air to touch the Pacific Ocean. The company was established in 2003 and is the only adventure tour of its kind in New Zealand. This tour is a must-do with many visitors to Auckland.
Skydiving is not an activity for everyone, but if you can get over the initial fear of being thousands of feet in the air and jumping out of an aircraft, the rest is simple. Skydive Auckland (skydiveauckland.com) not only offers skydiving excursions, but also lessons for first-timers and beginners. The company is an expert in what is known as tandem skydiving, which means the student skydiver is attached by a safety harness to an experienced skydiving instructor throughout the entire jump. Instructors guide the student through the processes of freefalling, piloting the parachute and landing. Minimal instruction is given to all students prior to the actual jump. Skydivers will jump from heights of 13,000 to 16,000 feet and freefall at about 125 miles per hour, all the while getting exceptional views of the Auckland region.
Auckland Jet Boat Tours
Based in Auckland's Viaduct Harbour, Auckland Jet Boat Tours (aucklandjetboattours.co.nz) offer boating adventure tours that depart from the Maritime Museum. Once fitted with a life vest and aboard the boat, you will travel outside of the harbour and under the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Once past Kauri Point, the jet boat enters Auckland's Waitemata Harbour and will begin to pick up speed. The boat captain then opens up the 300 horsepower twin engines and begins performing maneuvers such as 180- to 270-degree fish tails, power slides and wave rides. You will stay out in the harbour for a total of 35 minutes before returning back to the departure point. Auckland Jet Boat Tours also offers jet skiing adventures and combination tours that pair jet boating with other area adventures such as quad biking, bungee jumping and a helicopter ride.
One of Auckland's most unique adventures is an attraction called Snowplanet (snowplanet.co.nz). It is New Zealand's only year-round, indoor snow resort. Where else can you experience indoor winter sports one minute and walk outside to get a breath of fresh air and sunshine the next? Winter sports you can experience at Snowplanet include snowboarding, snow skiing, tobogganing, tubing and just playing in the snow. If you do not know how to snowboard or ski, you can learn at Snowplanet. Experienced instructors are always on-site to assist those who wish to learn and private or group lessons are available. Temperatures in Snowplanet are below freezing, usually around 23 degrees Fahrenheit, so it is wise to dress warm and wear waterproof clothing if possible. Snowplanet also rents ski gear including clothing, skis, snowboards and more to anyone who needs it. Snowplanet is open daily, Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday 10:00 a.m. to midnight, and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
