If you love flyfishing and want to catch a New Zealand trout while you are here for the rugby, then Taupo is a perfect destination.
Taupo is on the northern shore of Lake Taupo, with a number of world class flyfishing rivers nearby, including the mighty Tongariro and many others. September and October are great months for catching trout on the rivers as the spawning runs are in full swing. This year there has not been alot of rain and trout the size of rugby balls will be waiting at the river mouths for the barometer to drop and the rains to come.
If you are watching matches in any locations between Auckland and Wellington, and you have a few days to spare, then why not get to Taupo or Turangi and fish for a day or two. Whether you’d like the New Zealand Flyfishing Company to guide you on the river, or you’re happy to pop into a fishing outfitter such as Fly and Gun Hunting and Fishing in Taupo or Sporting Life in Turangi to hire some kit and have a go yourself, the timing could not be better.
The trout spawning runs are later this year which luckily coincides with the rugby, and the Taupo fishery is right in the middle of the North Island and easy to get to. Regardless of how well your team plays, why not combine some world class flyfishing as well. Who knows, you might even end up catching your own trophy.
