Cycle from Nelson to Abel Tasman National Park

The cycle from Nelson to Kaiteriteri along the spectacular Tasman Coast is 77 km of easy to moderate cycling (Grades 1 and 2) with very short sections up to Grade 3. Take two leisurely days with an overnight stop at scenic Mapua Village where restaurants, cafes, bars and art galleries create a vibrant waterfront.

Increase the variety taking a 36 km detour inland to Wakefield and Norris Gully (easy Grades 1 and 2). Follow the old Nelson railway through the heritage Spooners Tunnel, the longest cycling tunnel the southern hemisphere. Stay overnight at a rural B & B, surrounded by farmlands, orchards and vineyards.

Cycle rental companies will allow you to leave bicycles at Kaiteriteri where boats and water taxis provide scheduled services into Abel Tasman National Park. You can choose from a range of accommodation options at Kaiteriteri and take day trips into the Park or book an overnight trip into the Park.

It is possible to design your own self-guided tour to include The Great Taste Trail with a trip into Abel Tasman Park.
