Once you enter the vortex of Milford Sound you will not be disappointed, the intimidating cliffs surround you, the bush encroaches on you and the bird life deafens you.
The only way to get a bit of space and experience Milford from the view of ancient glaciers is on one of the many boat cruises.
The harbour terminal is large and efficient, there are many types of cruises to choose from depending on the experience you are after from a few hours to an overnight journey. Check out what people have to say about their boat cruise experiences on Rankers
Cruising through the sound you will see incredible waterfalls cascading down from hanging valleys and heaps of wildlife including seals and dolphins, you can observe these from the boats or you can charter a boat and go for a diving experience to see wildlife up close and personal.
As part of a boat cruise you can also check out the underwater observatory to see what really goes on below the surface:
The most magical time in Milford is late afternoon when the boats have all returned and the buses have all gone and there is nothing but stillness.
There isn’t much in the way of accommodation in actual Milford Sound.
But plenty of amazing campsites heading back towards Te Anau just off the main road.
